cover and spine the book is likely a Book Club Edition.
The copyright page of a first edition, first printing will

Notice that the publishing year is in Roman numerals in the
book club edition at the top of the statement and there is no
specific month or year of publishing at the end of
the statement.
A true first edition must have a publish notice that states
that the book was published in May,
1936. If the publish notice shows June, 1936 or
any other date, it is a later printing.
Watch out for the facsimile edition of
Gone With the
Wind, published in 1964. These books
are identical in appearance to the original first
edition, but were printed and published in 1964 or
later. The only way to tell a facsimile edition apart
from a true first edition is by the 1964 copyright
notice on the copyright page.

Description and interesting facts:
This was Margaret Mitchell's first and only published
book. It took her ten years to complete the novel.
The novel had sold over 30 million copies. Six months
after its release, in December of 1936, the novel had sold one
million copies. By fall of 1941, it had sold 2,868,200 copies.
In 1946, authorized foreign sales of the book were estimated to
be up to 1,250,000 and American sales had reached 3,713,272. In
1956, worldwide it reached the eight million mark; by 1962 it
had grown to ten million; by 1965 it was twelve million. In
1983, the number reached 16 million.
About a month after the publication of Gone with the Wing,
David O. Selznick secured the film rights for $50,000. His
production company, Selznick International Pictures, produced
the film, and it was distributed by Metro-Goldwyn Meyer. Sidney
Howard adapted the screenplay from the novel. The film was
directed by Victor Fleming and starred Clark Gable, Vivian
Leigh, Hattie McDaniel, Leslie Howard and Olivia de Havilland.
The film was re-released by New Line Cinema in 1998. The film
won nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director,
Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Screenplay.
